Bastille Day is France’s national holiday, celebrated with parades, fireworks over the Eiffel Tower, and incredible food.
The Bastille, a medieval fortress in Paris, eventually became a state prison that housed the literary great Voltaire and the infamous “Man in the Iron Mask.” Over time, it came to symbolize the harsh rule of the Bourbon monarchy. On July 14, 1789, a mob marched on the Bastille demanding arms and gunpowder. When guards resisted, the crowd stormed the fortress and freed the seven prisoners held inside.
Bastille Day marks the fall of royal oppression and the start of the French Revolution in 1789. Viva La France!
France has celebrated Bastille Day annually since 1880, and today the holiday is honored throughout the French-speaking world and by Francophiles everywhere.
While it’s France’s national holiday, it’s also our invitation to celebrate authentic French cuisine.
